Case Study – The Coulson Family

Vaillant Air Source Heat Pump Installation with Solar PV and Battery Storage

Client: The Coulson Family, 4-bedroom Detached Home, Middleton St George

Background

Project Scope

Installation of a Vaillant Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) – Vaillant’s AroTHERM ASHP was chosen for its energy efficiency, low noise output, and strong performance, even in colder climates.

Solar PV Array Installation – A solar PV system was included to harness solar energy, providing a renewable source of electricity to power the heat pump and other household needs.

Battery Storage System – By adding battery storage, the Coulsons would be able to store excess solar energy generated during the day for use during peak evening hours, maximizing their self-sufficiency.

Design and Implementation

System Design

The Beale Heating Services team conducted an energy assessment to determine the optimal specifications for the Coulsons’ system. They considered factors like the household’s heat demand, roof orientation for solar PV placement, and potential solar energy yield based on location and shading.

The design included:

Vaillant AroTHERM ASHP (8kW) – suitable for the heating demand of a 4-bedroom house..

6 kW Solar PV Array – fitted on the south-facing section of the roof to maximize solar yield.

10 kWh Battery Storage System – to store excess electricity produced by the solar array..

Installation Process

The installation was completed over five days:

Day 1-2: Solar PV Installation – The panels were installed on the south-facing roof, connected to the inverter system.

Day 3: Battery Storage Setup – The battery was installed and connected to both the solar system and the home’s electrical panel, ensuring any surplus energy would be stored for later use.

Day 4-5: ASHP Installation – The AroTHERM ASHP was installed outside the property, in a location with optimal airflow. Beale Heating Services connected the ASHP to the newly installed heating system which was specified to run efficiently at lower flow temperatures, aligning with the heat pump’s efficiency requirements.

The system was integrated with smart monitoring software to give the Coulsons’ real-time data on energy production, consumption, and battery charge levels.

System Testing and Client Training

After installation, the Beale Heating Services team performed rigorous testing to ensure the system functioned seamlessly. They also provided a training session to the Coulsons, covering:

Operation of the heat pump and adjustments to the thermostat for optimal comfort.

Monitoring solar PV and battery storage usage.

Energy-saving tips and best practices for maximizing system efficiency.

Results and Benefits

Conclusion

This project highlights the value of a comprehensive renewable energy solution. By combining the Vaillant ASHP with solar PV and battery storage, Beale Heating Services delivered a sustainable, efficient, and comfortable energy solution. The Coulson’s are now well-prepared for a future with greater energy independence, lower costs, and a smaller environmental impact.
